Cybercrime has been on the rise since advancements in technology progressed over the past decade. Netflix has recently become a victim of cybercrime when their original series Orange is the New Black, was stolen and leaked to the public. The hacker that was involved in the crime threatened to leak the series for ransom money, but Netflix didn’t fulfill the request which led to the leaking of the unreleased season of Orange is the New Black. This article allowed me to indulge briefly in the diverse ways cybercrime affect the Internet. We created a whole realm of communication that led to another avenue to commit illegal activity. Now that we’ve categorized cyber crime as actual crimes, more and more people are tempted to use their hacking skills to obtain information for either money or in worse situations, to jeopardize the lives and future of others.

Cybercrime has definitely affected the web negatively, keeping consumers in fear of the Internet criminals. During the Netflix investigation, they discovered cyber criminal  “thedarkoverlord,” also claimed to have stolen unreleased content from ABC, Fox, National Geographic and IFC. Technology has progressed to a point that large companies/networks are at risk of losing the very product that drives their businesses and networks. If major networks are at risk of being a victim of cybercrime then the average Jane Doe will definitely be at risk.

Companies and networks aren’t the only victims of cybercrime. As technology advances, more hackers and cybercriminals are compelled to find a flaw in the new security systems. As time progresses, technology is going to expand into revenues we’ve never thought could be. However, as technology progresses, legislation is more compelled to protect people from cybercrime, thus leading to the creation of new laws pertaining specifically to technological dilemmas that arise from creating another realm for criminals to explore.

I believe cybercrime will one day outweigh physical acts of crime because people think because they’re behind a computer that their actions aren’t reality. Most crimes are done without even knowing. Downloading that free CD that came out is a crime. Many people don’t know that. It’s considered stealing even if you weren’t physically in the position to take the CD. We have to be smarter about how we handle our financial lives and personal lives on the Internet and through social revenues because they’re the most vulnerable when it comes to cybercrime.

Technology ultimately controls the financial longevity of companies. Without technology, companies and networks wouldn’t thrive the way they do. As technology progresses, so does ability to protect consumers from becoming victims to cybercrime. I also believe if people took cybercrime as seriously as crimes that happen outside, everyone would be more motivated to protect themselves from acts such as this one. Everyone is susceptible to being affected by cybercrime, but it doesn’t hurt to try to protect yourself from it happening to you.
